What's the right business model for 0-1?

A friend and I were chatting about what's the best way to get the business off the blocks. He was mentioning, one needs to handle operations on their own till they reach a certain scale and then outsource the operations. I was arguing that it need not be that way, they can outsource the operations from day 1 that will help free up critical bandwidth required to scale the business. What do you think is the right strategy and what all other information to make a choice here?
